Louisberg Square, We have a Problem IV

Heh.

John Kerry is crying “uncle:”

Democratic presidential challenger John Kerry appealed for an end to the TV advertising war that has marked his election battle against President George W. Bush.

Kerry said the avalanche of negative television spots and attacks being shown on US screens was scaring off voters.

“Americans need a real conversation over our future,” Kerry said in a speech at a school in Spring Green, Wisconsin.

“What they don’t need is all these trumped up advertisements, they just make people curl up and walk away,” added the Massachusetts senator.

“Bring it on!” once again becomes “Make it stop!” for John Flippin’ Kerry.  Meanwhile, Kerry apparently hasn’t communicated this to his team:

[T]he Kerry-Edwards campaign Monday launched the new response ad “Doesn’t Get It.”

Using the president’s recent comments about doing the “mission accomplished event” all over again, the 30-second spot reveals what George Bush uses attacks and his fantasyland descriptions to hide - that he does not see the problems in Iraq or have a plan to deal with them.

Since Kerry was all for unilateral disarmament in the face of the Soviets in the 1980s, one must wonder when his change of heart came on that tactic.

What a buffoon.  Whining about how unfair the Republicans play is a staple of the Left, but it’s really pathetic to see a mainstream candidate adopt it.  It reeks of defeat, and once again, Kerry sounds like the kid at school nobody liked because he was always running to the teacher to tattle on the others. Meanwhile, he hypocritically releases an attack ad of just the sort he decries at the same time.

One wonders if Kerry plans to run again for the Senate in 2006 - at this rate, I suspect even the voters in Massachusetts are getting tired of this guy.

  1. Wow, you Republicans are blood thirsty aren’t you? LOL

Kerry asks for this election to take a step up and away from the muck created by attack ads that don’t add ANYTHING to this election and he’s crying uncle?

Don’t you think this country deserves better than 1000 ads from Rove & Co. that are built on half truth after half truth? This is a Presidential election - not a high school prom king contest.

I despise the direction politics have taken in this country since Lee Atwater. Both sides are at fault (just to clarify) but the Republicans are masters. It’s...disgusting.

  2. CB,
There have been ads that have been characrarized as negative on both sides.  The Kerry ads went after Bush’s National Guard Service.  The one’s from the Bush camp dared go after Kerry’s record.  How dare they look at what he has done for the last 20 years.  Dirty pool.  Was it not the democrats that released a 20 year old drunk driving story three days before the election?  If we are talking about the 527’s, the one’s supported by Soros have outspent the Republican ones by over 10 times.  The article here mentioned that Kerry was asking the election to be more civil at the same time his campaign was releasing a negative add.  If he wants to stop this, he should go first because the adds don’t seem to hurt Bush any.  Maybe he should have added to the resume so that he could be a real person instead of the person he is coming across as.

  3. "What they don’t need is all these trumped up advertisements, they just make people curl up and walk away."--J. Kerry

Well, which is it, Young Feller? You want I should curl up or walk away? I mean to say, if’n I curl up I can’t rightly walk away. And if’n I walk away, I’m gonna be in motion. Y’see…

  4. You Lefties are awfully thin-skinned.  If you think Lee Atwater started it you have a very short memory.  Try Lyndon Johnson in 1964! (BTW, you do know who first used Willie Horton against Michael Dukakis in 1988 don’t you?  You don’t? Does the name Albert Gore Jr. ring a bell?)

Your side has spent more than $60 million dollars on attack ads.  They’ve gotten the free ride of Fahrenheit 911.  There’s a cottage industry of anti-Bush books. They have CBS using documents they knew were phony to attack the President. Terry McAuliffe has been screaming that Bush was AWOL since February. Kerry calls for a ban because he’s getting creamed the very same day his campaign releases an attack ad.

Yet you think that the Democrats have been doing nothing other than try to talk about issues. Remember to take something before bed on November 2nd.  I have a feeling that hangover will be a whopper.

  5. Matt, LBJ certainly did his share but Lee Atwater made it an artform.  As for Willie Horton being used against Dukakis - don’t you really think he should have been? LOL

I specifically stated that BOTH sides have resorted to attack ads. You can’t compare the Democratic machine to the Republicans though, not really.  It’s awe inspiring how they’ve made negative ads full of half truths the staple of their campaigning for years.

You’re right, the Dems may very well lose this because they can’t get tough enough on this stuff or the rebuttal. It’s frustrating. What should have a been a cakewalk for them - the incumbant my very well be the worst president ever - is turning into an uphill battle.  If they don’t win this, they’ve blown it. Bigtime.

  6. CB - If?  This election is basically over barring some catastrophe like a depression somehow hitting before 11/2 or the terrorists manage to hijack an aircraft carrier.  The Dems lost it because they nominated the worst candidate in living memory, one who makes Bob Dole, Michael Dukakis, and Walter Mondale look good.

You may think Bush is the worst President ever and Clinton* one of the greatest - I’ve already commented on how I think that’s a pretty big pair of historical blinders - but I will pause to point out that your man Jimmy has just said he can’t vouch for FL 2004 because of “irregularities” but he can vouch for Chavez in Venezuela.  Is it any wonder that your assumption of a cakewalk flies in the face of the reality of Democratic presidential performance since JEC? And then they nominate Kerry?

    * Clinton ranked 24th out of 39 presidents in a October 2000 survey of academics and political scientists divided approximately equally between those leaning left and right. This put him towards the bottom of the average group. For comparison, Nixon 33rd, Ford 28th, Carter 30th, Reagan 8th, Bush I 21st. For Bush II to be the worst president, he’d have to beat out Andrew Johnson, Pierce, and Harding who are 36th, and tied for 37th respectively.
